Is a One-Year Contract Right for You?

Contract length and rate type are separate choices. Check the EFL to see whether a 12-month offer is fixed-rate, variable, or another structure. Fixed-rate plans can still include bill credits, usage tiers or free-hours windows, so the same contract can produce different effective rates in different months.

Compared with a longer term, a one-year contract lets you revisit your choice sooner. Compared with a month-to-month plan, it may offer more pricing stability but less flexibility to switch without a fee. Your renewal returns in roughly the same season next year; compare the actual available offers rather than assuming a particular season guarantees lower prices.

What to Check Before Enrolling

The 1,000 kWh rate is one point on a curve

Bill-credit and tiered 12-month plans can be several cents cheaper or more expensive at 500 or 2,000 kWh than at the benchmark. Check the column that matches your usage, not just the sort order.

Check the renewal offer before the term ends

Your renewal or default product may have different pricing. Set a reminder before the contract ends, review the provider's expiration notice, and confirm the date you can switch without an early termination fee.

Early termination fees vary by plan

Read the current EFL and Terms of Service for the fee amount or per-month-remaining formula. If you are moving, check the provider's documentation requirements before ending service.

Base charges and minimum-usage terms

A fixed monthly base charge weighs more the less you use, and some 12-month plans add a fee when usage falls below a stated threshold. Both are disclosed on the EFL and included in our estimates — check them especially for apartments and efficient homes.

Reading the EFL for These Plans

Read the EFL's contract length, rate type, average prices at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh, energy and base charges, bill-credit conditions, delivery charges and early termination terms. A fixed-rate contract does not fix your monthly bill: usage, credit eligibility and permitted delivery or regulatory changes can change the total. For time-of-use plans, check the paid and free windows against when you use electricity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 12-month electricity plan the same as a fixed-rate plan?
Usually, but not by definition. Most 12-month Texas plans lock the energy charge for the term — that's what fixed-rate means — while regulated TDSP delivery charges still pass through if the utility's tariff changes. A 12-month term can also carry structures like bill credits or free-hours windows that make the effective rate move with your usage even though the contract rate is fixed. The EFL states the rate type explicitly.
Can a 12-month plan include bill credits or minimum-usage requirements?
Yes — many of the cheapest-looking 12-month plans get their benchmark price from a bill credit that only applies at or above a usage threshold, and some charge a fee when monthly usage falls below a minimum. Both structures are flagged in the Notes column above and explained in the guide to how bill-credit plans work. If your usage varies seasonally, estimate the months below the threshold before enrolling.
How should I compare two 12-month plans with similar advertised rates?
Ignore the tie and compare structure: the base charge, any bill-credit threshold, minimum-usage fees, free-hours windows, and the early termination fee. Then compare estimated total monthly cost at your own usage — two plans that match at 1,000 kWh can diverge meaningfully at 700 or 1,500 kWh. Are 12-month plans cheaper than 24-month plans?
Neither term is always cheaper. Compare the current 24-month offers with one-year offers at the same ZIP and usage, including any credits, fees and the cost of leaving early.
What happens when my 12-month plan ends?
If you do nothing, you typically roll onto a month-to-month holdover product at a higher rate. Your provider must send renewal notices before the contract ends. Under PUCT §25.475(e)(2)(C), no early termination penalty applies in the final 14 days before the expiration date stated in your notice. For a residential contract ending on a meter read, use the notice's stated 'on or after' date. Shopping 30–45 days ahead gives you time to compare offers; it does not extend that penalty-free window.
Can I break a 12-month contract early?
An early switch may trigger the termination fee in your EFL and Terms of Service. Check whether it is a flat amount or depends on months remaining. If you are moving, ask the provider what documentation it needs and how to close or transfer the account.
Should I sign a 12-month plan in summer?
Compare the available offers when you need service or your contract is ending. A summer start generally means a summer renewal next year, but there is no guaranteed cheapest season. Compare alternative term lengths, their prices and any fee for leaving your existing plan before deciding.
