A 24-month plan locks your energy rate structure through two full summers — the season that drives most Texas bill pain. The appeal is insurance: whatever wholesale prices do next year, your contract rate doesn't move. The cost of that insurance shows up two ways: some providers price 24-month terms above their own 12-month equivalent, and the early termination fee is roughly double.
Two-year terms make the most sense when current pricing is good and your situation is stable. They make the least sense when you might move, when you signed at a seasonal price peak, or when the premium over the 12-month equivalent is large — you'd be locking in the bad part twice as long.

How This List Is Ranked
Plans are ordered by EFL average price at 1,000 kWh, from the same quality-checked inventory our compare tool prices. “Best” means lowest disclosed benchmark price, not best for every household — check the 500 and 2,000 kWh columns if your usage runs low or high, and use the compare tool for a ranking at your exact usage.
Who This Category May & May Not Fit
- Homeowners with no move on the horizon who want rate certainty through two summers
- Anyone signing during a favorable pricing period who wants to hold that rate longer
- People who hate re-shopping — one enrollment covers two years
- Renters on one-year leases — the cancellation fee math works against you (moving waives it, but only with documentation)
- Anyone signing at a seasonal price peak, which gets locked in for two years instead of one
- Shoppers who expect market prices to fall and want to re-shop sooner
What to Check Before Enrolling
Listed early termination fees on 24-month plans in our data commonly run around $295, versus about $150 for 12-month terms — and per-month-remaining structures cost the most when you exit early in a long term.
Compare a provider's 24-month price against its own 12-month plan. If the longer term costs meaningfully more per kWh, you're paying that premium every month for two years — make sure the insurance is worth it to you.
Some providers list 25-month terms that shift your renewal month. Same math as 24 months, but check which season the contract actually ends in.
Reading the EFL for These Plans
The EFL for a 24-month plan discloses the same items as any other — average prices at 500/1,000/2,000 kWh, base charge, bill-credit thresholds, and the early termination fee. Two things deserve extra attention at this term length: the exact cancellation fee structure (flat vs per month remaining changes early-exit math substantially over two years), and any language about in-term changes to pass-through delivery charges, which can move even on a fixed-rate plan.
